An urban garden has sprouted to life in Beaumont, promoting sustainability and taking processed foods out of homes and soup kitchens alike.
A year in the making, the one-acre plot of land across from St. Anne Catholic School is being transformed into a donation garden for local soup kitchens including Some Other Place in Beaumont and the Hospitality Center in Port Arthur.
The Giving Field will be financially self-sustainable through a "Farm Fresh to You" program. Modeled after community gardens in Houston, Austin, and New Orleans, the development of the Beaumont garden will come in seven phases. The garden will take up to five years to complete so that each phase will be self-sustaining.
